Christians constitute a minority
in Siliguri but their overall presence in the North Bengal is on the increase.
Over the years, tribal people like the Adivasis, and people from the Nepali
community have converted to Christianity. These people are primarily those
who lived below the poverty line and were hardly able to make two ends meet.
It must also be stressed that Christian missionaries, like the Missionaries
of Charity founded by the revered Mother Teresa has done a great job for
the welfare of the poor and the underprivileged. There are many churches
in Siliguri and the followers of the Christian faith are increasing in
numbers.
Christmas – Christmas is celebrated on 25th December
to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ to this world. Christmas is also
the most widely celebrated festival in the world because a large share
of the world’s population follows the Christian faith. Christmas
is also celebrated with much enthusiasm in Siliguri; churches and homes
are decorated and friends, family and relatives get together to celebrate
this special occasion. The Christian communities in Siliguri also play
the Carol, singing songs praising Jesus while visiting neighbors, friends
and relatives. Gifts are exchanged and bonds of friendships are strengthened
to mark this occasion; children eagerly wait for Santa Claus expecting
to be gifted with toys and their innocent wishes fulfilled on Christmas.
Christmas trees are decorated with colorful lights to bring in the joy
of love, peace and prosperity.
There are also prayers, functions and other programmes held in Christian
or missionary schools on this occasion. There is joy and merriment all
around symbolizing the energy of love that the Christ showers upon us. |
