Siliguri enjoys
a mild climate that ranges from a maximum average of 35º C and minimum
average of 20º Celsius. The month from May to mid-July is the hottest
months when the temperature can soar to almost 35º C, however the cool
winds blowing from the Himalayas provides respite to an otherwise hot and
humid climate. In the winter months from mid-December to early February
the thermometer can come down to 8-10º C; temperature rarely goes below
this in Siliguri even though it is in close proximity to the mountains of
Darjeeling and Sikkim.
The
monsoon season in Siliguri and the North Bengal region starts normally
during the second week of June and can last up to September. There is
large variation of rainfall from year to year and annual rainfall ranges
from 2600mm to 4000mm. Heavy rainfall occurs in the month of July and
August; intense rainfall up to 200 mm per day has been recorded in these
periods in the past. Although, water logging in some part of the town
is common, Siliguri’s topography does not allow large areas getting
flooded.
Windy conditions are prevalent in the autumn season but no cyclones have
been reported yet in Siliguri.
If it was not for the amount of vehicular traffic in Siliguri, it would
have maintained a pristine environment similar to the mountains surrounding
it. Even though heavily commercialized, Siliguri still maintains an ideal
climate and environment for its citizens and numerous visitors from different
parts of the country and the world. |
