Religion

<Buddhist> <Hindu> <Muslim> <Sikh> <Christians>

Siliguri as a town has fast acquired a cosmopolitan character. No wonder that the people of the town practice a variety of religion and beliefs. The majority of the population are Bengali Hindus who mainly migrated to this area during the partition of India at the time of Independence in 1947. There were subsequent spates of migration later from Assam and Bangladesh due to local problems. Apart from Bengalis, Hindus of other background such as Marwaris, Nepalis and Biharis form a large part of the population in Siliguri.

Buddhists, mostly from the hills, are also a large part of the population. Much of the population in the nearby hills like Darjeeling, Sikkim etc are Buddhist and large section of this population has been traditionally migrating to the plains temporarily during the winter. With the growth of the town Siliguri, a large section of this people have started settling down in the town on a more permanent basis.

Muslim population in Siliguri is concentrated in some of the less developed areas of the town. Although the Muslim population is quite large in the town, their share in the overall economic and social activity is arguably less than proportionate.

The Christians are a small but influential community in the town. Some of the best schools of Siliguri are run by Christian missionaries, famous missionary institutions such as the missionaries of charity of Mother Teresa also has a base in Siliguri.
