Water
SupplyThe municipal corporation has water supply projects to supply drinking water to every house. This project has been quite successful in providing potable water to the citizens. The main rivers of Siliguri and the adjoining areas have the snowmelt water of the Himalayas as their source. Owing to this, there is good availability of water throughout the year; moreover, underground water is available within a maximum depth of 10-15 feet in the plains, therefore, there is no problem of drinking water in the city. The main rivers of the region are the Teesta, Mahananda, Balasun and Mechi River.
Further, two 132/133 KV and one 220/132/33 KV substation will be added to meet the growing demands of power due to gradual industrialization of the region.
It also has a well connected network of broad gauge, meter gauge and the narrow gauge railway. The North Eastern Frontier Railways has two important railway junctions; one in New Jalpaiguri and the other in the Siliguri Junction near the Central Bus Terminal. Siliguri also has direct air links with the other parts of the country like New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. It is duly awaiting its up gradation to international status. Post & Telecommunication On the other hand, Telecommunication facilities in Siliguri are of the best standards in league with the major cities in India. Only a few year ago, BSNL was the only service provider in Siliguri, but as the demand for better services grew, telecommunication companies have made a beeline to offer services to a large subscriber base in Siliguri and the surrounding areas. Apart from BSNL, which is the only government enterprise offering telecommunication services in Siliguri, there are five other private companies operating in Siliguri: Reliance, Tata Indicom, Airtel, Hutch and Aircel. Land & Housing Proposals for acquiring land are underway in Dabgram, Kawakhali, Thiknikhata, Pelku and Rupsing. Recently private industries have been flourishing in the Phulbari area located alongside the State Highway 12A and around the Eastern Bypass road. The state government is also constructing a satellite township named Uttorayan in the Chandmani Tea Estate area where housing facilities will be available for residents in the outskirts of the city. Apart from the state government’s initiatives, private construction companies are coming up with huge residential apartments and mini towns to provide modern housing facilities to the public. |
