The climate of the Darjeeling district region is ideal for mulberry cultivation for silk extraction. This factor must be taken into consideration for future setting up of sericulture industries. The sericulture department of the west Bengal government has its centre in Matigara near Siliguri which provides active support for production of silk worm as well as marketing of the same. The bulk of the Silk produced here are of Mulberry variety, although other varieties such as muga is also common
