Tourism
Though it not often publicized, this area has great potential for the production of photochemical and pharmaceutical products. Though the Cinchona bark is actively used for quinine and emetine, there are several medicinal plants that can be used in making a variety of pharma products. These are the ones that have been identified: Alkaloids from Ergot, Vinca Rosia, Atropine and Scopolamine from Dhaturas, Reserpine from Rauvolfia, Lemongrass oil, Palma Rosa oil, Khus-khus oil and Citronella oil.
Station Feeder RoadThe State Forest Department’s Sukna Distillation Plant in Sukna produces 50,000 liters of Citronella oil per annum. While the West Bengal Photochemical and Pharmaceutical Development Corporation’s unit in Tolapara, Jalpaiguri is already running in profit. It is important that the state government encourages small farmers and businessman to cultivate medicinal plants and herbs as this do not require a large area of land, and they can be grown in forests, tea gardens and untended fields. Other lucrative possibilities in medicinal products include the extraction of pepsin from papaya and ginger products manufacturing. While Darjeeling district produces 4,000 tonnes of ginger per annum, it is sold to other districts and states without being processed.
