The Darjeeling district area has great prospects for becoming a leader in the Food Processing Industry. Presently, there are a few medium and large scale food processing units around Siliguri including the state government owned Kanchan Food Processing Cooperative, Daburs food processing unit and others. Recently Ken Agritech, a Bangalore based firm has also set up a food processing unit around the town. More projects are on the anvil.

In Darjeeling district approximately 90,000 tonnes of Pineapples, 20,000 tonnes of Oranges, and 80,000 tonnes of Tomatoes is produced per annum. Apart from the Darjeeling district, 6 lakh oranges are made available from Sikkim in peak seasons.
Such huge availability of raw fruits provides great opportunity for setting up of food processing plants to produce edible items like Tomato Sauce, Orange Squash, Vinegar, Orange Marmalade and Juice, Frozen Fruits, Jam and Pickles.

With this objective in mind, the Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority along with the state government has identified 230 acres of land at Leusipukri near Siliguri for development of an Industrial Growth Centre where land and infrastructure will be provided for manufacturing, food processing and the service sector.
