Flower nurseries in the Darjeeling district produces around 60 metric tonnes of flowers while the Sikkim produces 20 metric tonnes. Kalimpong is especially known for the high quality and variety of flowers it produces like orchids and anthodium, whereas orchids from Kurseong are already set to beautify the homes of the Dutch. A floriculture centre for the North Bengal region will be set up by the North Bengal University in association with a Netherlands-based company called the Practical Training Centre. The Dutch company will also buy the flowers from North Bengal and export them to the international market.

FlowerFlowers like the orchids, anthodium, gerbera, carnation, lily and Dutch rose found in the hilly region of North Bengal, especially, Kalimpong and Kurseong has great demand in Netherlands, West Asia, United Kingdom and Japan. This is a tremendous opportunity for the floriculture industry in Darjeeling district to expand its customer base internationally. Apart from the flowers, the climate of the region is ideal for cymbidiums, cypripedium, cactuses, bulbs and gladiolas, which makes them available in huge quantities in the region.
